Methodology

Altcoin Season Score

The score is calculated by comparing the price performance of the top 50 altcoins (by market cap, excluding stablecoins) against Bitcoin over approximately 90 days. The percentage of altcoins outperforming BTC is scaled linearly to 0-100. A score of 75+ indicates Altcoin Season, 25 or below indicates Bitcoin Season, and anything in between is Neutral.

BTC Dominance

Bitcoin dominance is sourced from CoinGecko's Global Market Data API, which calculates it as Bitcoin's market cap divided by the total cryptocurrency market cap. This includes all tracked coins and tokens.

Performance Comparison

Each altcoin's performance is measured as its 30-day price change minus Bitcoin's 30-day price change. A positive value means the altcoin outperformed BTC over that period. We use 30-day data from CoinGecko as a proxy for 90-day performance when historical data is limited.

All data comes from the CoinGecko free API, including global market data, coin prices, market caps, and historical performance metrics. Data refreshes every 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Altcoin Season Index?
The Altcoin Season Index measures whether the broader cryptocurrency market is favoring altcoins over Bitcoin. It scores from 0 to 100 based on how many of the top 50 altcoins (by market cap, excluding stablecoins) have outperformed Bitcoin over the past 90 days. A score of 75+ means it's 'Altcoin Season,' while 25 or below means 'Bitcoin Season.'
How is the Altcoin Season Score calculated?
The score is calculated by comparing the price performance of each of the top 50 altcoins against Bitcoin over approximately 90 days. If 75% or more of these altcoins have outperformed BTC, the score is 75+ (Altcoin Season). If only 25% or fewer outperform BTC, the score is 25 or below (Bitcoin Season). The percentage is scaled linearly to a 0-100 range.
What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin dominance is the percentage of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization that is made up by Bitcoin alone. For example, if the total crypto market cap is $2 trillion and Bitcoin's market cap is $1 trillion, BTC dominance is 50%. Rising dominance generally means money is flowing into Bitcoin relative to altcoins, while falling dominance suggests altcoins are gaining market share.
What does it mean when BTC dominance is rising?
Rising BTC dominance typically indicates a 'risk-off' environment in crypto where investors prefer the relative safety of Bitcoin over smaller altcoins. This often happens during market downturns when altcoins fall harder than Bitcoin, or during strong Bitcoin rallies driven by institutional buying. It's generally associated with 'Bitcoin Season' on the Altcoin Season Index.
What triggers altcoin season?
Altcoin seasons are typically triggered by a combination of factors: Bitcoin stabilizing after a major rally (giving altcoins a chance to catch up), increased risk appetite among retail investors, new narratives or technological developments in altcoin ecosystems (like DeFi summer or NFT booms), and overall bullish market sentiment. They tend to occur in the later stages of crypto bull markets.
Which coins are included in the calculation?
The index tracks the top 50 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, excluding Bitcoin itself and major stablecoins (USDT, USDC, DAI, etc.). This ensures the score reflects genuine altcoin performance rather than being diluted by pegged assets. The list updates dynamically as market caps change.
How often is the data updated?
The data refreshes every 10 minutes using the CoinGecko API. This includes current prices, market caps, and performance metrics for all tracked coins. The client automatically polls for fresh data, so you'll always see near-real-time information without manual page refreshes.
