Frequently Asked Questions
How does the 'If I Had Bought' calculator work?
The calculator takes three inputs: a cryptocurrency, a purchase date, and a USD amount. It fetches the historical price of that cryptocurrency on your chosen date from CoinGecko, calculates how many coins you would have purchased, and then multiplies by the current price to show what your investment would be worth today. It also calculates the total return, percentage gain/loss, and annualized return.
Which cryptocurrencies are supported?
The calculator supports 18+ major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), BNB, XRP, Cardano (ADA), Dogecoin (DOGE), Polkadot (DOT), Avalanche (AVAX), Chainlink (LINK), Polygon (MATIC), Uniswap (UNI), Litecoin (LTC), Stellar (XLM), NEAR Protocol, Sui, Aptos, and Toncoin.
How far back can I calculate?
You can go back to the inception date of each cryptocurrency. For Bitcoin, data is available from 2009 onwards. For newer coins like Solana or Sui, data starts from their respective launch dates. If no price data exists for your chosen date, you'll receive an error message suggesting you try a later date.
Is this calculator accurate?
The calculator uses historical daily price data from CoinGecko, which is one of the most comprehensive cryptocurrency data aggregators. Prices are based on the daily average across multiple exchanges. The calculation does not account for trading fees, slippage, or the practical difficulty of buying at the exact daily price. Results are for illustrative purposes only.
What is annualized return?
Annualized return (or CAGR — Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the rate of return that would give you the same total return if the investment had grown at a constant rate each year. It allows you to compare investments held for different time periods on an equal basis. A $1,000 investment that grew to $10,000 over 5 years has an annualized return of about 58.5%.
Does the calculator account for fees and taxes?
No. The calculator shows gross returns before any fees or taxes. In practice, you would have paid exchange trading fees when buying (typically 0.1-1%), and you would owe capital gains tax on any profits when selling. The actual after-tax, after-fee return would be lower than what is shown.
